  • Where to Cruise:

  • Ha Long Bay
    Heavenly Castles on Earth
Halong Bay is the jewel in the crown of Vietnam’s travel destinations. One hundred and seventy kilometers from Hanoi, in north-eastern Vietnam, Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on earth. The bay is a magical blend of land and sea with thousands of limestone islands and islets in a myriad of shapes and sizes.
The shapes are as varied as the sizes and many of the islands have been given names, derived from their shapes, such as Voi Island (Elephant), Ga Choi Island (Fighting Cock), Qua Chuong Island (Bell) and Mai Nha Island (Roof); incredibly 989 of the islands have been given names. Numerous islands contain caves and grottos, some hidden away for millions of years, but now accessible to explore and marvel at their immensity and spectacular displays of stalactites and stalagmites.

    Titop Island
On November 22, 1962, this tiny island had the honor of receiving a visit from cosmonaut Ghermann Titop, a hero of the former Soviet Union, accompanied by President Ho Chi Minh. To mark the significance of their visit, Uncle Ho named it Ti Top Island. The island is a very popular stopover for visitors cruising Halong Bay.
The beach on the island takes the shape of a half-moon crescent encompassing half of the island. A bit small though it might be, it wins kudos for its quiet and airy atmosphere, its clean white sand and clear waters, as well as its alluring landscape. The beach is ideal for swimming nearly year round, as even in winter the water temperature is still a pleasant 65-70 degrees F.
However, perhaps the island’s real attraction is the pagoda-styled lookout point its peak. After climbing the 427 stone steps winding up the mountain one is treated to a most incredible 360 degree view of Halong Bay. For those who tire out before reaching the summit there is a spacious lookout point half way up as well.

    Sung Sot Cave
Situated in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage area, Sung Sot or “Surprise Cave” is on Bo Hon Island, and is one of the most spectacular and largest grottoes of Ha Long Bay. The mouth of the grotto is reached by ascending about a hundred stone steps. One is surrounded by trees and foliage on the journey up as the shimmering bay below offers an ever more panoramic vista to admire.
The cave is partitioned into two chambers; the first being similar to a wide theatre hall, with many stalactites hanging from the high ceiling. A narrow passage leads to the second chamber, where a flow of natural light bathes the surfaces. The light is filtering in from above, through a large opening creating a natural skylight, this opening also serves as the exit from the grotto. The chamber is so immense it could contain thousands of people at one time.
At the deepest point of this chamber a "royal garden" appears with a clear pond and a fascinating landscape of small mountains. Many birds and plants (benjamin figs, cycads and centenary banyan trees) can be seen here. On some days groups of monkeys straying in from the dense vegetation of the island might appear, in search of fruit.
The grotto covers some 10,000 m2. There are thousands of stalactites and stalagmites along the 500-meter paved passage. Light posts line the passage and illuminate the amazing scenery. Spotlights of varied colours are placed in such a way to be unobtrusive and add to the enchantment of the grotto.
The 30-meter high roof of the grotto, the walls and innumerable cracks and crevices are evidence of millions of years of spectacular natural creation. Close to the exit a mammoth formation stretches from floor to ceiling, tapering at the centre to form a concave pillar that appears to be keeping the ceiling in place. Walking through the cave ones imagination can run wild conjuring up all kinds of fantastic creatures and fanciful creations.
And of course, as always here in Vietnam, there are legends! One such involves a rock which seems to form the shape of a horse and a long sword. As the legend goes, Thanh Giong (Saint Giong) helped the people of the area to chase away evil spirits and demons. After this feat, Saint Giong flew to heaven, leaving a stone horse and sword behind to guarantee the demons did not dare to return.

    Cua Van
The fishermen and fishing families of Halong Bay live on small floating houses anchored in sheltered coves at the bases of tall mountainous islands, thus deriving some natural protection from Mother Nature’s wrath in typhoon season. There are several fishing villages in the bay, the largest being Cua Van with about 130 floating houses and a population of about 600 people.
Cua Van is unique as it is the only village with a primary school and a clinic (floating, of course). The village is home to generations of fishing families and many of the residents never leave, but grow up and grow old in this tiny unique world they are born into.
The children learn to swim before they can walk and they row little bamboo-basket watercraft on their own, and amazingly deftly, when only about 5 or 6 years old. Cua Van is at the top of any list of places to see when cruising Halong Bay, those who are lucky enough to visit are captivated by this extraordinary little community and its distinctive way of life.

    Three Peaches
Three peaches is one of the most beautiful beach in Halong bay. It is 22 km from south north of Bãi Cháy Tourist Wharf. There are three mountains inside the imposing limestone and beaches area. With the height of over 20 m and in the shape of peaches, seen from afar, this three islands have a natural and charming beauty.
The island connects to a legend of a love between a young fairy who was fall in love with a poor fisherman. One day, she stole three peaches from Heaven for him in order to help him to have an eternal life if he ate these peaches. Then, they can together forever. The King of the Heavens discovered the robbery and turned the peaches into three stone islands and forced the young fairy had to return.
Nowadays, Three Peaches belong to Lan Ha bay, it's still a pristine area and still not many people visiting. You can go swimming, kayaking or sunbathing on the nice beach or have free style to relax on beaches.

    Dau Be Island.
On the south-east side of Ha Long Bay, Dau Be Island is 500 m from Hang Trai Island to the east, and 28 km from the Bai Chay Tourist Wharf, in an archipelago comprised between the Tra Ngu and Da Le islands outside Ha Long Bay.
On the south-east side of Ha Long Bay, Dau Be Island is 500 m from Hang Trai Island to the east, and 28 km from the Bai Chay Tourist Wharf, in an archipelago comprised between the Tra Ngu and Da Le islands outside Ha Long Bay (seaport of Lan Hạ Bay).
It has an area of 22,863 sq. m, and its highest peak reaches 139 m. When speaking of the island, it is impossible not mention to Ba Hâm Lake, a famous spot which people had known long time ago.

    Ba Hầm Lake.
Situated on the south-west side of Hạ Long Bay, Ba Hầm Lake is found on Ðầu Bê Island (Calf Head Island) in Lan Hạ Bay. This island is part of the range of islands at the farthest end of Hạ Long Bay, bordering the immense zone Long Châu Sea. Ba Hầm Lake is situated in the middle of a narrow, rectangular area, with the all four sides enclosed by vertical cliffs.
The lake is a system comprising three wide and round pits, linked together by a narrow and meandering tunnel. Stalactites hang from the ceiling in a myriad of strange, coloured forms. The silence is disturbed only by the sounds of the boat’s oars. On the island are many species of plants such as orchids, benjamin figs, banyans and cycads, which blossom throughout the year. It is also the home of yellow-haired monkeys, birds, flying squirrels and bats. Under the deep blue surface of the water are the animated lives of shrimp and fish. Although 25 km from the shore, it has long been considered an ideal tourism zone.
The entrance is a open semi-circular hole in the flat stone wall on the north-west side of the island, 4 to 5 m above the sea. Starting from the entrance, tourists enter the first tunnel, which boasts a forest of stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes and various colours. They fall down the water surface like the roots of banyan or ficus trees. The deeper one pushes into the tunnel, the darker it becomes. The river is deep yet so clear that one can see shoals of fish swimming.
Some 100 m from the entrance one finds a shaft of light coming from the roof of the tunnel, which reveals different kinds of orchids clinging to the cliff, cycads growing here and there, trúc duôi gà (a kind of reed with cock’s tail-liked yellow leaves) flourishing in clumps. In the southeast cliff of the second tunnel there grows an old carambola tree, which bears fruits all year round. Tourists can find groups of monkeys, flying squirrels, or silver-headed parrots gathering in its branches. Lying one cliff away from the second one, the third tunnel is home to various species of bats and butterflies. Amidst the tranquil atmosphere, you feel like boating in an abyssal well walled by mountains. Ba Hầm Lake is one of the beauty spots of Ha Long Bay.

DAY 2: Halong Bay –Luxury Violet Cruise. Meals = Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Today, all guests will embark on our day boat – the Sunset. You will cruise to the Bay’s untouched areas, deep in Lan Ha Bay. Take a light bike ride along the coast line of Cat Ba, through the rain forest to the Viet Hai village. A fantastic way to get in touch with the nature of the biggest Halong island. Please read below the options of this day:

A. If weather conditions are good:

In the morning, the Sunset crew welcomes all guests from Ginger, Jasmine and Violet. A breakfast is served in the cozy restaurant while the Sunset moves deeper into the Halong Bay straight to Cat Ba Island. The nature is simply marvelous in this area of the Bay.

We arrive at Viet Hai dock and take a leisure bicycle ride along the water front, passing forests and a stone tunnel on the way to the Viet Hai Village. We explore the village with its traditional houses and its residents. Guests can take a short walk to the surrounding jungle. The journey continues to the local primary school (Heritage Line supports this school with teaching equipment). A memorable way of interacting with the children in the classroom is to become their substitute teacher or sing along with the kids – if you dare.

After this, guests cycle back to the dock and board the junk. The cruise continues unhurried to Ho Ba Ham. During this slow trundle, lunch is served. At this secluded area guests kayak through water tunnels and close to stunning rock and islets. This beautiful lagoon allows as well to jump from the boat or at a quiet beach for a refreshing bath. Back on board take your seat or bench on the sun deck and simply dive into the nature on the way back to your mother junk for your second night.

B. If weather conditions are not good (strong waves prohibit cruising to Viet Hai Village): In the morning, the Sunset crew welcomes all guests from Ginger, Jasmine and Violet. A breakfast is served in the cozy restaurant while the Sunset moves deeper into the Halong Bay straight to Cat Ba Island. Even the weather might not be that suitable but still the Bay offers mysterious views and photo objects from the sun deck.

Kayak and swim at the Hai Quan lagoon area and get in close touch with the Bay. Before midday, we cruise to the “Surprise Cave”. Lunch will be served in the restaurant of the Sunset. After lunch, guests visit the “Surprise Cave” or they can engage in kayaking around the Luon cave tunnel.

In the afternoon, the Sunset cruises back via several Halong Bay sights – Cua Van fishing village – Soi Sim – Dau Xuoi channel and Toad Islet – before boarding the mother junk again for the overnight.

Preparation and inclusions on this day:

Biking helmet, First aid kit, durable shoes, water bottle during cycling, torch for cave visit, rain coats (in case of light showers, in the event of heavy rain, biking will be cancelled), kayaks/paddles and life jackets. For guests who do not want to go cycling to Viet Hai: Enjoy a relaxing spa treatment on board or walk along the water front, fish at the dock or take a cooking lesson from the chef.

Overnight on board.
